Welcome to the Professional Development (PD) modules.
Congratulations on making it this far, and I hope you’re enjoying the course. Just to recap on the modules you’ve completed so far: the Contextual modules guided discussion about factors influencing the schools you teach in, who you teach with (other teachers), and who you teach (learners). The Teaching modules then provided the standard teacher training modules of how to teach the four skills, in addition to teaching vocabulary, phonics and about writing tests: all information in the Teaching modules being adapted to teaching in Japanese public schools. The PD modules here continue on the path of; where you teach (Contextual), how you teach (Training), to how to take your skills further (PD).
The PD modules build on Contextual and Teaching modules by exploring factors of modern Japanese public schools, in addition to more recent teaching approaches. In addition to developing more rounded skills, the PD modules provide the skills to research and write. There is so much research on English teaching in Japanese public schools (as included in the recommended reading throughout this course), but little of it carried out by the ALTs themselves. As we work in the schools and can literally see daily how education is being carried out, we are in the perfect position to report more clearly on it.
Plans are in motion to create a writers circle on Google docs. ALTs can upload and share their research ideas for others to comment on, add to, and find research/writing partners. We can work in this virtual environment and report on teaching practices with an aim of continually improving ourselves, and teaching practices all over Japan. A past initiative, specific to Japan (but at university level) is here.
