ALT Training Online modules
The modules for this free online course are being prepared by ALT researchers and ALTs' themselves.
When modules are completed these final drafts need proofreading to ensure they are beneficial to all ALTs - these modules need you ALTs to proofread them.
Please write to [email protected] with the subject: Send me a module to check. And we'll send one right out to you.
Please include:
You will receive two documents: the module as a pdf, and a proofreader’s word document to write your comments on.
You are being asked to:
- Proofread the module.
- Complete the reflection questions.
- And comment on the module.
Your responses to reflection question will go onto the website after the module has been thoroughly proofread and any final editing finalized. You will be notified when to do write your comments on the website.
Note: in the case of large numbers of proofreaders you may be put on a waiting list to proofread a module later in the year.
Current and future ALTs will get a higher quality training course with your help. Your input is vital, and time doing this is very much appreciated.
Any questions? Please just email them over to [email protected]

Another great opportunity for professional development is to proofread for a peer reviewed journal, and JALT has three. Journal editors offer professional support, so even those with minimal experience can help.
The three areas are summarised:
The three areas are summarised:
Reviewers
Reviewers read papers that have just been submitted and write reviews for them. Reviews help us decide whether to accept or decline a paper, and what needs to be done to revise it. All reviews are double-blind (that is authors don’t know who is reviewing their papers, and reviewers don’t know who the authors are of the papers they review). Reviewers are asked to review five papers if possible. Reviewing will happen from the second half of January through the first half of March 2020.
Content Editors
After a paper has been accepted, it is assigned a content editor who helps the author revise mainly by reading successive drafts and providing feedback. Papers vary a great deal in quality, as does the amount of work required for revision. As with reviewing, content editors are asked to take five papers, though many take less than that according to how busy they are, etc. Content editing will happen mainly happen in February and March 2020.
Copyeditors
After a paper has been revised by the author in consultation with a content editor, it is sent to the copyediting team. Copyeditors proofread and check things like citations. Again, five papers is the usual expectation. Copyediting will happen mainly from March through June 2020.
If you have little experience, our recommendation is to start with copyediting because you will be working with papers that are already fairly well polished. Also, training and mentoring is available in all of these areas.
